Author Ian Banks had a great sci-fi book about that, forget the name though. He wrote that every civilization utilizes simulations at almost every level as they advance. That will not change with how powerful a civilization can become. You could future test, re-engineer your entire civilization as they maybe seek their own way to escape this dimensional universe into another or even engineer their own. Because no matter what is a simulation, they are still within the parameters of and created out of the fundamental properties of the boundless energy all universes come from. The real question is what does it matter? Same thing about parallel universes…if either could be proven (which they can’t) what would it change? I appreciate the concept but at the same time it’s 100% waste of time, why not contemplate something that matters and/or could be proven. These concepts are good for click bait but not much else.
No science could discover anything outside our reality while we are inside, so it's just as possible to say that we live in a multiverse or a simulation or none of the above. It's better to recognize that there is an unkown reality about which nothing(!) can be said
